#FM17 | Reading FC | part XVIII | Septuple!

Well, if you thought the eighth season was extremely succesful (and it surely was) I don’t know what you will think at the end of this part. The ninth season with Reading FC in Football Manager 2017 was even more successful as we won one more trophy than in previous season.

It’s crazy, isn’t it? I think it is because I really did not hope for trophy galore like this.

Transfers 2024/2025

Like I wrote in the previous part of this save I bought four players despite I knew they will not get work permit. They all went for loan spell in PEC Zwolle in terms of new transfer and recruit strategy.

All of them were bought during January transfer window for 7.75M combined.

During this season I sent many players for loans but I also sold some players including Tyler Blackett, Simon Broughton and Ollie Williams.

Tyler Blackett was in our club for the whole save but he wanted to go for a new challenge. Unfortunately for him he has broken his leg during last winter so ha had to wait for the summer transfer.

But there were not too much important outgoing transfers and we did not need to buy some players as replacements. I would probably do it as I think I have good enough young players in the team yet as backup and they can step in everytime I need them.

2024/2025 Season Summary

We played some interesting friendlies including wins 7-0 over Boca Juniors or 5-0 over Ajax and 4-1 over Wolfsburg.

But the new season started with two cup competitions – Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup. We played against Manchester United in Community Shield and they were 1-0 ahead after the 32 minutes.

But we scored two goals thanks to Kelly and Swift and they tied it to 2-2 nine minutes before the end. Three minutes later Josh Barrett scored our third goal and we won the Community Shield 2024.

The first trophy 🏆

Just only three days later we played Tottenham in Tel-Aviv to retain UEFA Super Cup. We were absolutely great and thanks to goals by Loader, Kelly and brace by Dominic Samuel we won 4-0.

The second trophy 🏆

Despite we won six trophies last season the expectations for this season were not too high. To reach Champions League Group Stage when we are Premier League champions and we have automatic participation, that’s hard task……

Premier League season started in great style. We beat Wolves, Southampton, Arsenal and Watford and we scored 16 goals in these four matches.

We got Legia Warszawa, Lyon and Napoli to the Champions League Group Stage and we started this competition very well too as our rotation squad beat Legia 4-2 away, 2-0 Lyon at home and Napoli 1-0 at home too. We also won 3-1 in Napoli and secured the first place in the group just after four matches.

We lost some points in the league but it was only due to draws with Chelsea, Manchester City and West Brom.

Like last year we played in the FIFA Club World Cup. We beat Al-Ahly 5-0 and Flamengo 4-1 in the Final so we retained also this trophy. It was good for some young and backup players to get some playing time in international competition.

The third trophy 🏆

During the hectic Christmas period we played very good and our form continued in great style as we lost points only with Manchester City and Watford in the January and we were able to proceed to next round of both domestic cups.

In the EFL Cup we played once again with Manchester United in the Final. We were 1-0 down from the 15th minute after goal by David Evans by Molloy equalised in 62nd minute and Paul Rimmer scored winner in the extra-time.

The fourth trophy 🏆

As season continued there were some lows in terms of injuries and some players were unable to play in crucial matches as they would normally do.

But if you take a look at the results in the screens bellow you will find we were in absolute fantastic form this season.

Thanks to wins over Arsenal, Leicester and Manchester United we reached the FA Cup Final as well and we demolished Chelsea 4-0 in the Wembley after hattrick by Danny Loader.

The fifth trophy 🏆

In the time when FA Cup Final was played we were more than 14 days Premier League champions once again. As we beat Bournemouth on May 2nd and thanks to other results we we were able to celebrate league title.

We finished this season in Premier League with fantastic 100 points as we finished also unbeaten.

The Invincibles!

We won 31 from 38 matches and made seven draws. We scored 91 goals and conceded 27. Manchester united finished second 15 poinst behind us and Chelsea third 22 points behind.

We scored 49 goals at home and 42 away. We conceded 9 goals at home and 18 away. Leicester, QPR and Everton were relegated this season.

I was very happy we did not lost in the league this season as it was very well played for the whole season.

The sixth trophy 🏆

The last match of this magnificent season was Champions League Final. It was played at Olympiastadion in Berlin and there were 74,244 spectators. We played against FC Barcelona.

They still have Marc-André ter Stegen, Neymar, Luis Suárez or Lionel Messi in the squad. The last one started the Final on the bench.

Barcelona was clear favorite in the Final but I think we were better side and we won deservedly despite the Final ended “only” 1-0. But who cares…?

We scored the winner in the 24th minute thanks to Liam Kelly who was voted Player of the match. I think it’s not a surprise that Kelly scored the only goal from free kick despite there was a small help from the Barca players in the wall.

This means only one thing…

The seventh trophy 🏆

Stats 2024/2025

Striker Danny Loader had another fantastic season as he scored 45 goals and made 25 assists in 60 apperances. He also had most player of the match awards – 14.

Goalkeeper Luke Southwood had 51 apperances and he kept 24 clean sheets. What about another players?

Dominic Samuel scored 25 goals and made 10 assists in 40 apperances. Antony Molloy scored 18 and Paul Rimmer scored 17 goals what is great in fact they are backup players.

Liam Kelly scored 11 goals and made 16 assists and Josh Barret scored 10 goals and made 13 assists. I was surprised by stats by Dean Castle who scored 9 goals and made 5 assists despite he played usually only a couple of minutes.

Loader also claimed Player’s Young Player, Players’ Player of the Year and Footballer of the Year awards and his 45 goals during the season is the new club record as he beat his own record from the 2020.

Season Review

We lost only one match during the season and it was the Champions League Semi Final second leg in Paris against PSG.

Youth Intake 2024/2025

The latest youth intake was decent as there some new talented players in our U18s squad.

I selected Huw Misbah, Mané and Angus Tandy for you. There is also midfielder Ryan Field and despite he has English name and surname he has Czech nationality as his priority.

New Stadium

The last information in this post is about the new stadium. Board of the club decided that will build a complete new stadium with 58,628 capacity and it will be named Robin Friday Arena after Reading former playre Robin Friday who played for the club 70’s.

It will cost around 237M and it will be financed without havint to secure any external funding. It is expected to be completed at the end of June 2026.

  1. Hello,

just wondering about the set pieces (corners). Are you still using your same setup as made available for download in january?

I’m having lots of corners but few goals :), seems difficult to setup a good corner tactic with FM17.

    Btw, nice blog.

    1. Hi Frederic, thanks for your comment 😉 And yes, I still use the same routines as I wrote about there but also one or two other but I had not enough time to write about them.

I also use the same Throw-In Routines and the short one is very successful.
