FM16: “The Academics” – part XXII – (SI) Heartbreak

The strange 2028/2029 season with AB is finally over. We were able to mantain domestic cup and league again, we lost some of our best players again, we developed some youngsters to good players again and we won the Europa League…oh, wait. We lost to Arsenal after penalties in “rematch”. What happened?

We started new season with new home and away kits like every year. This time I remove the gold colour and the kits were simple green-white and black-green.

Both with Adidas original logo same as during whole this save and beautiful Footbe Logo by Stam from The club have sold 7,830 season tickets for this season – last year it was 6,081.

Transfers 2028/2029

I have a feeling that every time I write about some our player he left the club very soon after it. I had to sell defenders Renato Kubiski to PSG for 8M and Tobias Lutz to Bournemouth for 5.5M.

Midfielder Lasse Jensen also left the club, he moved to 1. FC Köln for 7.25M and our best player during last two season – midfielder Frederik Kristensen moved to Bayern München for record transfer fee around 12M.

Almost all key players left the club during summer and we had to build the squad from the start again. And during winter Barcelona came with the bid for 18 years old striker Anders Toxvaerd. I rejected it but Toxvaerd was unhappy and wanted to leave at any cost. I sold him for 3.5M with some clausules and he remained with us on-loan.

Like every year I wanted to bring some new young players to the club but I had to also bought one a little more experienced defender and it was Peter Thrane from Molde for 1.3M.

I laso brought back left defender Jakob Kirk who moved to Lazio three years ago from our club and he was available for a free. He went on-loan to Helsingborgs immediately because he had to play.

Interesting young player in my eyes is central midfielder Albi Sali. I bought him from Midtjylland and I hope he will be key player very soon.

During winter I also bought defender Kristian Hogh from Chelsea but he was on-loan at Viborg and he was not able to play for us during second half of the year. But he is very good player and he will be in starting XI next season.

Competitions Summary 2018/2029

I start with domestic cup for this part because it will be the shortest part. We’ve won DBU Pokalen for the third time in a row and it was our eighth win in overall. We beat FC Kobenhavn in Semi Final after great home second leg in which we won 4-0 thanks to good performance by mixture of youngsters and some experienced players like Eremenko.

In Final we beat Brondby IF thanks to a goal by Martin Hansen in the first half.

Domestic League – we had a decent start with wins over Odense and Randers but we also lost to Viborg or drew with Lyngby and Aalborg.

Superliga_ Overview Profile-vertFC Kobenhavn had a very bad season, mainly the first half of the year, they were in relegation zone for a two or three weeks.

Our main rival in league battle were Brondby IF. We lost with Nordsjaelland 1-2 at the end of the September and that was our final lost in this league season. In the end FC Kobenhavn made their way to the 2nd spot and Brondby finished third.

We finished the Superliga 25 points ahead of the second place. We scored 68 goals and conceded only 17.

Great season by our team and from that perspective that many younsters played in the league during long season.

Champions League – we had a solid group this year again when we met Real Madrid, Club Brugge and Shakhtar Donetsk. We lost both matches with Real, beat Shakhtar and Brugge and drew with these two teams as well. That meant we finished third in the group and moved to the Europa League…

Europa League – fantastic journey by my players. We started with Valencia in the 1st Knockout Round and we lost 0-1 in the first match. But the second leg was much better from our side and we’ve won thanks to goals by Michaelsen, Lagache and Hansen.

In the 2nd Round we met VfB Stuttgart. The first game finished with a goalless draw and we were able to score three goals at home in the 2nd leg again. Godoy scored an own goal and Toxvaerd scored brace.

Everton was our next opponent in the Quarter Final and we’ve won 2-0 at home in the first leg thanks to goals by Meyer and Sali. We lost in Goodison Park 2-3 but we were through to the Semi Final where we played against Wolfsburg and we advanced to the Final thanks to goal by Albi Sali in the 2nd leg extra-time.

And there is Final match against Arsenal. This is the case why is “Heartbreak” in the headline of this part. Final match was played at La Romareda stadium in Zaragoza. And we’ve won 3-1 over Arsenal thanks to goals by Lagache, Randrup and Michaelsen. BUT!

When I clicked to continue button and I read the news there was a crash dump…

So I had to play the final match once again. We took the lead thanks to Michaelsen but Arsenal equalised in the 77th minute. Extra-time was goalless and we lost after penalties 5-6 when Thrane missed the target as our second player. The drama with a bad end for us.

Stats 2028/2029 and others

Probably the most important stat of this season is that AB are now the most decorated team in Superliga history because we lifted 16th title in the history.

This season we scored 68 league goals and conceded 17. We collected 83 yellow and 9 red cards and thanks to stadium expansion to 12,808 capacity we had the new best average attendance with 11,626.

The best player of the season is surely midfielder Martin Hansen. This youngster came to our club as a backup and he was third choice for his position. But Kristensen moved to Bayern and we had to replace him. I chose Martin Hansen and his progress was fantastic.

Henrik Michaelsen became the best goalscorer of the season once again despite injury. He scored 22 goals in all competitions, Anders Toxvaerd scored 21 goals but he made also nine assists.

Regen Nichals Meyer who turned 28 this year is still very important for us and he scored 4 goals and made 9 assists. Youngster Albi Sali had the best pass completion and Neil Paterson had 11 assists.

Left defender Kilian Lagache had 16 yellow cards and Runar with Thrane were sent off twice.

William Thorhauge was named the best goalkeeper of the year, Kent Moller young player of the year, Peter Thomsen U21 talent of the year, Moller U17 talent of the year and six players was included to best Danish XI of the year. Good season.

Next season we have to play at Telia Parken stadium with FC Kobenhavn. Our stadium will be enlarged by another 6404 seats and it will take 10 months to complete. This is how our stadium look before expansion…

    1. Not much to mention. National team managers play or played mostly the old players around 30+. They were only once at World Cup and they were not succesfull at EURO tournaments three times.

National team is 50th in the world rankings.

      1. That’s really interesting, I thought they might have improved some as your players are starting to stretch across Europe

  1. I have to admit. I will replay it until I win. I mean it’s only right, since you won it the first time. But, you are better man than me.

    Great job.
