FM16: “The Academics” – part XII – Two seasons in Superliga

Hello everyone, this is another part of my FM16 save with Danish club Akademisk Boldklub. I wrote about season 2018/2019 in the last part of this story when we were promoted to the Danish Superliga. You can read about how we did it during first two seasons in this competition and also about some players development and transfers of our young regens to the bigger clubs which was much needed because of poor financial status of club.

Transfers 2019/2020 & 2020/2021

We brought three new players to the team before the first season in Superliga. We secured a signature of young Norway forward Trygve Mork for two-years loan from Molde, central midfielder Alexander Tved Hansen for a free from Aalborg and right midfielder Malthe Skovsmose from Hobro IK for a fee aroun 240K.

There also players which left our club including three very big money transfers – Mads Bech to Viking, Oliver Enevoldsen to Aalesund and Patrick Olsson to AC Milan in winter. If you follow my Twitter account you probably saw this “saga” there because Olsson is my regen and during one and half season he became key player of the team. We will participate on his next treansfer as well. He was named The Best Youth Danish Player of the Year and received call-up to Under 19 team when he was 17 years-old.

He was sent to Catania for loan spell and he played 14 Seria A matches during first half of the year 2020. I was a little disappointed before next season because he was available to loan but he rather went to Brondby than to back to our club…

Nevermind. Another transfer window before the 2020/2021 season was a quite similar. We signed defender Michale Fisker on loan, midfielder Sergei Eremenko from FF Jaro (Finland U21 player) and AMC or CF Christoffer Rasmussen on loan from Odense.

There were also departures including one of my best regen again. Central Midfielder Thomas Randrup signed a contract with Red Bull Salzburg after we were not able to refuse a fee around 500K. The biggest transfer so far was the departure of our best striker Bjarne Henriksen who was bought by Stromsgodset for a fee around 1,3M. Our club can not compete with it…

Youth Intake 2020 & 2021

There were also another two Youth Intakes during last two years and we were lucky to get another group of great young players. You can see some of the bellow…

Average age of my team is 20 years old at the end of 2020/2021 season…

Superliga 2019/2020 & 2020/2021

We had an absolutely great start to the first season in Superliga when we beat Silkeborg, Aalborg and Randers in the first three matches and we scored 11 goals. But we were brought back to earth after this good start and we lost 12 matches from 26, won 10 and drew 4. We finished the first season ninth in the Preliminary Phase and played in Relegation Stage – Group B. We won this Group ahead of Aarhus, Esbjerg and Viborg.

Thanks to Relegation Group Stage win we were able to play in European Places Playoff. We beat Silkeborg 7-3 after two matches but we lost 2-3 to Aarhus in the Second Round the season was over.

Same as before the first season the expectations by Board was “Don’t be outclassed too often” which was too shitty for me. I wanted to be around sixth/seventh place in the table in our second season in Superliga. When I told it to my squad, all players were unhappy because I had too high expectations…

We had an absolutely nightmare start to the 2020/2021 season with five lost and two draws in first seven matches but it changed after match with Odense (4-2 win).

After quality winter pre-season we were much better side in the second part of this season and we were higher and higher in the table. We played four North Copenhagen derbies during one month with Lyngby BK and we have won three from four matches.

We finished seventh in the league after Preliminary Phase and we have played Relegation Stage Group again. We won this group and played European Places Play-off same as last year. We beat Silkeborg after penalties in the first round but we finished in the second round after lost with Viborg. Same story as in the first season.

But if you look at the table screenshot you will see that there is one big reason to cheer for…

DBU Pokalen 2019/2020 & 2020/2021

…the reason to cheer for is our great campaign in DBU Pokalen. We went through to the 4th Round during 2019/2020 season where we lost to Aarhus but the last season was phenomenal for us in national cup.

We beat B.93, Hillerod and AC Horsens after penalties. We also beat Brondby in the Quarterfinal and there was a North Copenhagen derby Semifinal against Lyngby. The first leg ended with a 2-2 draw but we have won 4-3 at home after extra-time winner in the 119th minute!

We met Randers FC in the Final and we won it thanks to a goal by Malthe Skovsmose who was our best player during last season and he was also the best goalscorer from winger position.

It was the first DBU Pokalen Final for AB after 20 years and I was very happy to won it against strong Randers FC side. It also means that we have qualified to Europa League Group Stage for the 2021/2022 season! We will probably not play a big part of this competition but it could have a big impact for our finances…

Players development…

As I wrote above, if you follow my Twitter account I published there some time ago two sreenshots of my regen central defender Brian Nielsen who became key squad member during one year and it’s only about time when some bigger club buy him.

I’m also very happy that some other players are better and better. Just look at screenshots of players bellow. Midfielders Malthe Skovsmose, Alexander Tved Hansen and Nichlas Meyer are absolutely the best players in our team and it would be very tough to replace them.

This is my squad after the 2020/2021 season. There will be some departures but probably only one or two new players will come due to a low finances. I will surely bring some regens to the First Team Squad and will closely check their development for the First XI.

Takeover Saga

The club have also a new owner. The takeover saga was a very long process but Emil Pedersen became a new chairman after a couple of months of negotiation. Pedersen was AB’s Director from October 2020 and his main goal is to get the club back on a sound financial footing but he also said there will be any investment at this stage so I expect any changes in near future…

And what next? I probably forget something to write but you if you are interested in some screenshots or some details of the save/players/club etc. just let me know in comments or at Twitter.

We will have a new stadium before the 2021/2022 season, is there a bright future in front of us…? We’ll see…

Thanks for reading. @KeysiRensie.
