I really love 4-4-2 formation. Probably from the first day I started to learn something about football. But.
In FM15 I play for Spartans FC and I decided to change formation after a couple of seasons to 4-2-3-1. You can try this tactic if you subscribe to it via Steam. The link is below.
Team shape is set to „Structured“ and mentality is „Standard“. We can probably play with „Fluid“ team shape but I wanted players to control the game and follow the instructions with less creative freedom.
Team instructions are – More Direct Passing, Pass Into Space, Cler Ball To Flanks, Hit Early Crosses, Low Crosses, Run At Defence, Shoot On Sight, Exploit The Flanks, Play Narrower, Drop Deeper, Stick To Positions, Close Down More, Get Stuck In, Use Tighter Marking, Prevent Short GK Distribution, Much Higher Tempo & Be More Disciplined.

- Attacking Midfielder/Support – Instructions
- Complete Forward/Attack – Instructions
The Wingers are very important for this style of play. If we look at Assist Locations we could see that 44 assist came from left wing and 20 from right wing. Thanks to this we managed to score many goals from six yard box. That includes and passes to far post.
Our typical attacking movement is one-two pass at the half line, pass to the space on the wing where is midfielder or wing back, low cross before goal and finish. Very important player for this type of movement is Attacking Midfielder who gives support for central midfielder, wing backs and provides passes to the wings. The most common goal type is placed shot.
The most typical goal #1
I realized we have two types of the most typical goals. The first one – central midfielder -> attacking midfielder -> winger -> complete forward at the centre of the box and shot. Wing back offers support at his side but he not receive pass in this movement.
The most typical goal #2
Second version of our typical goal is this one. From one wing through middle ball gets to the other side and winger has minimal of three options for pass or cross. In this movement he chose pass to the far post where is winger who started this movement.
I have been playing with this formation for six season with Spartans FC. We went from Scottish fifth tier to the Championship thanks to a 4-4-2 formation. In last season with this formation we managed to won Premier League title five times in a row. We won twice UEFA Europa League, League Cup four times in five years and FA Cup five times in a row.
In 2027/2028 season we won all 38 Premier League matches, scored 99 goals, conceded 17 goals…
